Lately I’ve been trying to disconnect from screens whenever I can. It’s been great so far — I’ve mostly filled that downtime with reading.
I’ve been working through some books by Blake Crouch, a mystery/thriller writer. Last week I read Upgrade, about a guy who works for a gene-editing protection agency — he investigates and arrests people who illegally edit genes. Naturally, something happens and his own genes get edited, giving him advanced abilities. Now he has to investigate what happened to him and track down who did it.
Now I’m on Dark Matter, and I’m already 100 pages in after starting it just last night. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but the short version: a guy wakes up in an alternate reality of sorts and has to figure out what happened to him.

Both books are real page-turners, and they’ve reminded me why I keep coming back to this genre. There’s something about the “ordinary guy, extraordinary problem” setup both of these share — it hits a sweet spot between escapism and real ideas, while still giving me a good mystery to chew on. That foundation, plus not quite knowing how it’s all going to come together, is what keeps me hooked.
Good stuff — I’d recommend either one if that’s your type of thing.
