Flashback The Quest for Identity is hands-down one of my favorite games of all time. It was released in 1992 on several consoles, but the Sega Genesis was also my preferred system. The game is a side-scrolling platformer with similar gameplay to that of Prince of Persia, which provided hours of immersive story lines set in a cyberpunk future.
Another reason this game stands out to me is the cinematic quality of the cut scenes. Each level had at least one full motion animated sequence that would lead into the next area, which really carried the overall experience of the game.
Of course, being an fm synthesis fanatic, the soundtrack was also pretty top notch. Often minimal at the right times, really added to the ambience of the gameplay making it more suspenseful. But then there were moments when the action was non-stop and the music kicked in and got things moving. Someone uploaded the full soundtrack to youtube so I’m including it below for your listening pleasure. Take a moment to check it out.
