The tag line of this blog is music.movies.dev. It occurred to me that I haven’t posted anything about movies in quite awhile. To be honest, I haven’t really seen a lot of movies in the last few months, but there are some that I plan on going back to re-watch and then write about while they’re still fresh in my mind.
Lately, I’ve been caught up in the DCTV lineup. That is: Gotham, Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow. I’ve also taken some time to watch through Marvel’s shows, like Agents of SHIELD, and the run on Netflix like, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, but I’ll save those shows for another post.
Gotham has been pretty great lately. The show really picked up on season 2 with the rise of the villains. We got a taste for Doctor Strange, Mr. Freeze, Riddler, Clayface, Azrael, and a potential Joker… just to name a few. We’re on season 3 now which kicks off with an introduction to Poison Ivy, and then a mini-run with the Mad Hatter taking over.
I don’t want to get into too many details so as not to ruin any spoilers, but this current run with Mad Hatter has been fun and it’s good to see a villain that’s truely a villain worthy of Batman…even though there’s no mention of Batman at this point. I really can’t wait to see how this series unfolds and hope it lasts for awhile.
The second season of Supergirl kicks off with a change to a new network. With change comes more change, and for the best, in my opinion. The season opens up with Kat Grant stepping down from her company and Jimmy Olson taking over. Kara gets a new job as a reporter, and with that, a new boss.
With those new changes, we also get to see Superman finally, and more of Martian Manhunter and new set of heroes and villains. I’m really looking forward to this new direction as it sits comfortably in the Arrowverse because we get to see more crossovers happen between all of the shows, including the talks of a 5 part crossover. We’ll see how that unfolds.
We enter the third season of The Flash, and there are some changes being made. Last season, Barry went back to save his mom which gave us the beginnings of Flashpoint from the comics. While this was just a single episode, it left some ripples in the timeline…even to the point where it carries over to Arrow.
Overall, I’m liking the changes happening so far. We do have a new version of Harrison Wells which is kind of weird, but we also have seen Jesse Quick and Wally West as Kid Flash. There’s still a lot more to be seen in the direction that this season is heading, so I’m looking forward to how it’s panning out.
Season 5 of Arrow started off much like Supergirl and The Flash in that it seems that the network is trying to take each show in a new direction. Based on what I’ve read so far, this makes sense for a couple of reasons.
- The shows will make more sense when they eventually crossover
- The underlying theme and motivation of the characters fit together within the same universe
- It ultimately breathes new life in the shows
I personally like the new 5th season of Arrow. Last season was really painful to watch as there was a lot of drama surrounding Felicity and Oliver—more so than usual. Now that that’s aside, we have a strong new team with new recruits: Mad Dog, Artemis, Mr. Terrific, and Ragman. As I said in The Flash comment above, the timeline has also been changed in a way that John Diggle’s daughter, Sara, is now John Jr. So that leads me to believe that there’s more potential for a cohesive story and mood between the shows. I’m not giving up on this show just yet, but boy was I going to last season.
Lastly, we have the second season of Legends of Tomorrow. This show started off pretty good on the first season, but then started to lose it’s way as the show carried on. I grew tired of Vandal Savage and the Hawkman/Hawkgirl saga. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one and the networks must’ve gotten the hint that the show couldn’t have survived another season if any changes weren’t made. So they made those changes.
The second season starts off with, basically, a brand new reboot of the show. We say farewell to Rip Hunter and Captain Cold…at least for now. And say hellow to new folks. We have Dr. Nate Heywood who becomes Steel, a sort of take on Commander Steel. We also have Vixen, after having a short episode that introduced The Justice Society of America. For villains, we have what appears to be the beginnings of the League of Doom. So far, we’ve seen the Reverse Flash make a couple of appearances, and now some talks of Damien Dhark. So I’m really looking forward to seeing how this season pans out.
